This lovely set of 'foo dog' ornaments make an ideal bookend pair for small books as they have a nice weight to them. They are made from a soapstone type material and are known as Feng shui, Fu Dogs or Imperial Guardian Lions and are a strong feng shui symbol of protection. You would normally find them at temples, and government offices. They represent family wealth and social status and so you would also find them displayed in front of wealthy homes. The history behind them suggests one is female (yin) and one is male (yang). The hand carved female holds a puppy and the male is holding a ball.
They are vintage so they have suffered a bit of damage in their lifetime such as a missing foot and some scuffs & chips as I have shown in the photos, but this doesn't detract from their charm!
